Ankle sprains

Now that we are in the heart of summer, injuries are piling up. Most prevalent so far are ankle sprains. This occurs when the ligaments supporting the ankle joint are stretched beyond its normal limit, sometimes even tearing.

If this occurs to you, remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Some individuals will also benefit from an anti-inflammatory medication like Advil or Motrin.

Next should be your evaluation, usually with an x-ray to make sure there is no chipped or broken bone. At that same visit “protection” will be initiated, either an ankle strapping or brace, to help maximize the healing potential of those injured ligaments.

The final critical piece is rehabilitation. Usually performed at home, you will need specific exercises to reduce stiffness and strengthen the muscles that surround our ankles.

If you do get an ankle sprain, you won’t be sidelined alone. It is estimated that approximately 25,000 sprained ankles occur each day.
