The American Diabetes Association recently published guidance regarding the most common form of nerve damage in feet. Called diabetic neuropathy, it is caused by elevated levels of sugar in the blood.
Keeping blood sugar level at a normal level and exercise can prevent this nerve damage.
If a diabetic has neuropathy and it is painful, medication is usually needed.
Unfortunately, up to 50% of diabetics may not know they have this nerve damage. Diabetics should be assessed annually. Additional testing may be needed for those at risk for falling.
Evidence demonstrates an association between vitamin B12 deficiency and long-term metformin use, the most common oral diabetes medication. Given that vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause neuropathy, periodic measurement of B12 levels and supplementation may be needed.
