“Super Shoe” technology has shattered endurance (long distance) running records. As an example, the first marathon to be run in less than 2 hours occurred while wearing such shoes. The defining feature is a curved carbon fiber plate inside a thicker, lighter, and more resilient foam sole. This is a revolution against those who embraced running barefoot — a trend turbocharged by Christopher McDougall’s book, “Born to Run.”
World Athletics Athletic Shoe Regulations were approved December 22, 2021. Maximum thickness of the sole for road events is 40 mm under the heel and under the ball of the foot. Shoes cannot contain ‘sensing or intelligent’ technology or more than one stiff plate.
Nike began this trend with Vaporfly. Now every top brand has models to speed you along with less energy loss than traditional running footwear. Below are adaptations by various manufacturers:
Adidas Adizero Adios Pro
Asics MetaSpeed Sky
Brooks Hyperion Elite 2
Hoka Rocket X
New Balance FuelCell RC Elite v2
Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%
On Cloudboom Echo
Puma Deviate Nitro Elite
Saucony Endorphin Pro 2
Skechers GOrun Elite Hyper
