The effects of diabetes on feet

Diabetes is a lifelong chronic disease that is caused by high levels of sugar in the blood. When diabetes is not properly controlled, damage can occur to the feet in many ways:

•  Impaired Nerve Function (Neuropathy): Without normal sensation, feet become more susceptible to injury.

•  Reduced Blood Flow (Peripheral Arterial Disease): Reduced blood flow impairs the body’s ability to heal wounds, making even minor injuries prone to infection.

•  Skin changes: Extremely dry skin can crack open, which may be painful and vulnerable to infection.

•  Deformities: Special footwear may be necessary to accommodate structural changes in the feet, such as bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet.

•  Thickened Toenails: Diabetes can cause toenails to become thick, brittle, and more susceptible to fungal infections.

•  Weakened Immune System: Diabetes can impair the immune system, making infections more frequent and harder to cure.

Early recognition of diabetic-related foot problems is critical to avoiding serious complications. Feet should be examined daily, paying special attention to the area between your toes. A mirror or family member may be necessary to properly inspect the bottom of feet. If you notice any cuts, scrapes, blisters or sores, notify a podiatrist immediately.

To help prevent complications, we provide shoes and inserts to many diabetic patients. Medicare and many private insurance companies recognize the benefits and often provide these at little or no cost to the patient.
