Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails

This occurs when the corners or sides of the toenail dig into the skin. Ingrown toenails are frequently caused by trimming toenails improperly (too short or rounded at the corners). They may also be caused by shoe pressure (from shoes that are too tight or short), injury, fungus infection , or heredity. Ingrown nails, aIso known as onychocryptosis, are often very painful.

Left untreated, ingrown toenails may become sore, red, and infected. The skin may also start to grow over the nail.

In most cases, treating ingrown toenails is basic: the offending portion of the nail needs to be trimmed out. (Our office has numbing medication and specialized equipment to make this a comfortable task.)

Soaking the foot in warm water to which Epsom salt has been added is also helpful. Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed if an infection is present.

If ingrown toenails are a persistent problem, an in-office procedure is usually performed to repair this problem permanently. There is little discomfort and practically no limitations afterwards.

We focus not only on treating the immediate symptoms but also on preventing the recurrence of ingrown toenails. Because each situation is unique, schedule a consultation with Dr. Steven Miller by calling (847) 675-3400 or clicking here .
